Sabaya is a sparkling performance troupe from Ancient Art Studios. Artistic director Aurel, director Najla, and rehearsal captain Barbara rehearse and coach Sabaya each week as they prepare for upcoming shows and keep adding to their repertoire and technique.
Aurel, Yasmina Ramzy, Amar Gamal, Yousri Sharif, Kay Hardy Campbell, Phaedra, Amity Alize, and other highly-esteemed artists have all contributed to the high-powered repertoire Sabaya performs. The group’s repertoire and staging are known for being professional, diverse, and well executed, honoring a wide variety of belly dance styles including Egyptian Raqs Sharqi, Turkish 9/8 with finger cymbals, Lebanese Debke line dance, veil dance, Theatrical Folkloric, and much more. Once a choreography is learned, Aurel, Najla, and Barbara oversee staging and polishing of the number with a special interest in honoring cultural roots, the upcoming event’s needs, and a love for the details which make the group shine.
Sabaya dancers each audition before entrance to the group. Members are chosen for their professional technique, performance experience, and personality. Each dancer is required to thrive calmly under the stress of long rehearsals and show schedules. During shows and the weekly rehearsal process, each dancer holds a position in the group and manages responsibilities which help Sabaya function smoothly. Administrative meetings are part of membership where each member reports progress and seeks help with problem solving as it relates to their duties.
Sabaya is available for all manner of shows and has performed at weddings, multicultural events, private parties, educational presentations, and fund-raisers. Sabaya is also adept at producing shows for charitable causes which feature both Sabaya members and other glittering and generous dancers from the New England belly dance scene.
News of the group’s activities is often touted on the Ancient Art Studios’ Instagram page, here on their webpage, and, for the most recent Sabaya happenings, please follow the group on their Facebook page, Sabaya Belly Dance Troupe
